Spare Wheel Carrier

We upgraded our Land Rover’s original spare wheel carrier to a heavy-duty version due to concerns with the factory Land Rover spare wheel construction. The stock design solely attaches to the back door, placing all the spare wheel’s weight on it. This setup posed a risk of damaging the back door, especially during off-road adventures or on uneven terrain where the spare wheel’s movement could lead to rattling and potential harm.
Our choice was a swing-away spare wheel carrier equipped with a piston mechanism. Unlike the original configuration, this carrier secures the spare wheel to the back door, but the carrier itself is mounted onto the car’s chassis. This design redistributes the weight away from the back door, preventing excessive stress.
The piston carrier’s innovative swinging movement enables us to open the back door while keeping the spare wheel carrier in place. As a result, the back door no longer experiences shaking, contributing to an overall improvement in its longevity. By relieving the back door of the spare wheel’s weight, we have not only eliminated potential damage but also enhanced the durability and lifespan of this crucial component of our Land Rover.
